Download and install Kidsplorer on your child’s computer
Go to kidsplorer.com/download and download the Windows installer. Run the installer on your child’s computer — it takes about two minutes and does not require restart.
After installation, Kidsplorer opens automatically. It will prompt you to connect the device to your parent account.
What changes after installation: Kidsplorer runs as the primary browser on the computer. On non-administrator accounts (the recommended account type for children), Kidsplorer’s keyboard hooks prevent switching to a different browser while Kidsplorer is running.
Create your parent account
During the first-time setup on the device, you’ll be prompted to scan a QR code or visit a URL to create your parent account. Your parent account is where you manage:
- The approved site whitelist
- The browse schedule
- Site request approvals
- Time extension approvals
Create the parent account on your phone or any other device — not on the child’s computer.
Add your child’s profile
In the parent portal, add a profile for your child. You’ll need:
- A display name for the child (used only within Kidsplorer — not an email address)
- Age group (used to suggest appropriate curriculum packs — no PII collected)
If you have multiple children, add a profile for each one. Each profile has its own whitelist and schedule.
Build the first whitelist
The whitelist is the list of sites your child is allowed to visit. Start small and add sites as needed — it’s easier to add sites than to debate whether a site should be there.
Suggested starting sites for ages 6–10:
- Khan Academy (khanacademy.org)
- PBS Kids (pbskids.org)
- National Geographic Kids (kids.nationalgeographic.com)
- Your child’s school’s online resources or learning management system
Or install a curriculum pack: In the parent portal, go to Curriculum Packs and select the subjects relevant to your child’s current schoolwork. A pack installs a curated whitelist for that subject in one click.
Set the browse schedule
In the parent portal, open Schedule and set the hours when browsing is allowed for each day. Outside these hours, Kidsplorer displays a lock screen.
If your child requests more time, you’ll receive a notification and can approve or deny a 15-minute extension from your phone.
Connect the device to your account
If the device isn’t already linked during first-time setup, you can connect it from the parent portal under Devices. Each device you install Kidsplorer on appears here after its first run.
